What is your group about, and what do you do?
The Pender Island Public Library welcomes over 15,000 visits each year and 50% of residents have a library card. We are a vibrant community hub providing access to literature, digital resources, and a variety of educational and fun programs for adults and youth.
When did it get started, and what sparked it?
The Pender Island Public Library was first started in 1973. Back then it was known as “the Pender Lender” and operated from the back of a church. Today we have a beautiful modern and accessible building thanks to the generosity of local donors.
How often do you get together, and typically when? Can new members join any time?
We are currently looking for new trustees! Their two-year term would begin March 2027. We are a governing board, so no hands-on tasks are required. But we do need people who can help oversee the financial well-being of the library, to set strategic priorities, and build community partnerships.
Trustees ensure financial oversight, health, safety and accessibility compliance, fund and donor development, review policies, and engage in Board training. The Library Board meets ten times a year.
What gets your members most excited in your meetings?
As a newer member of the Pender Island community, the highlight of serving as a trustee has been that I have become friends with so many creative, insightful and generous people who appreciate that we have a lovely library right down the road.
Do you run any community events or initiate special projects?
The Pender Island Public Library staff deliver all kinds of exciting events, from graphic novel camps for students to author readings. They also work with Ptarmigan Arts to showcase artwork by island artists. Our most popular event is our Kids’ Summer Reading Club which welcomes kids to keep up their reading skills over the summer months, with free activities, fun stickers, book prizes and a reading medal.
What’s in the future for your organization?
Next year is the library’s 50th birthday! We are planning some exciting activities to celebrate during Summer 2027. Our goal as trustees is to build a future for our library so that Pender will always have access to high-quality library services that meet the needs of the community.
